Bowls
THE Men’s Pairs finals were held last weekend and delivered spectators a demonstration of precision bowls.
Young Scott Pennington paired with Bill Gardiner in a shot-for-shot tussle against the elite veteran Graham “Wings” Evans and Jim Paganoni.
Conditions were perfect on the fast green and well grassed lead bowls set the tone for a 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 competition.
The precision of the opposing skippers meant the 18-end game resulted in a tie on 13 each.
A toss for the mat saw the Pennington and Gardiner team give it away to have the bonus of the last bowl to be played.
A dream shot put down by Paganoni and another by Wings foiled their opposition, and gave them the trophy.
Alongside, the Plate was played out between Graham Miller and Gary Robbins and Brian “Boomer” Gearing and Charlie Joyce.
The competition was just as fierce with the Gearing and Joyce duo finishing 17/14.
Cricket – T20
THE Bin Chooks remain undefeated following week three of the Busselton T20 competition, while The Lemons picked up their first win for the season.
The Bin Chooks took to the crease first against The Heavy Rollers on Wednesday night, with Ash Leeney (34), Miles Armstrong (28) and Ben Payne (25) all retiring in a final score of 172 from their 20 overs.
Armstrong’s 28 pushed him to become the leading run scorer for the competition with 87 from three games.
His one 6 for his innings also takes him to equal leader in the most 6’s hit this season with Brett Titterton on five.
Needing more than 8.5 per over, The Rollers needed some big hitting and started the chase off well.
With Titterton leading the way, The Rollers were 25 runs in the third over before Robbie Williams was dismissed for 3.
Titterton also hit two 6’s in this game in a show of clean hitting and what the crowd was waiting for
When Adrichem was out for 9, the Rollers were 2 for 76 with one retiree in the 26th over.
However, a steady flow of wickets fell - losing 5 for 22 left them to be 7 for 98.
When the last wicket fell, The Rollers were 122 and 50 runs short.
Match 6 was one of the most entertaining matches of the season and came in the form of The Jack of all Trades versus The Lemons.
Batting first after winning the toss, the Jack’s got off to a good start with nine runs being taken off the first over.
However, when Kirk was dismissed with the score on 12, the next two wickets fell for only another five runs.
Three for 17 was soon looking better when Bernie and Hillzy put on 68 for the fourth wicket.
Some lower order hitting late in the innings resulted in the Jacks getting a total 7 for 122.
Jess Dornan was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 4 from 2 overs.
The Lemons were keen to get a win under their belt and with 11 off the first over, things were looking good.
When Dornan (27) and Ritchie (25) both retired, Becket and skipper Wellings tried to up the ante.
However, they were soon dismissed for 11 and 5 respectively but the run rate was still a healthy 8.3 an over.
Christianson and Maccora both came and went bringing the crowd favourite, Ben Horrocks to the crease.
A towering 6 over the fielder’s head at cow corner brought the crowd to their feet before Horrocks was caught attempting the same shot one too many times.
Gerrans and Tubby Taylor combined to get The Lemons close to a bonus point win but with three runs required off the last ball of the 16th over, they could only manage a two.
The Lemons made the runs the next over.
This week’s matches involved a top of the table clash with the Swingers playing the Bin Chooks and the two bottomteams, The Heavy Rollers and The Jack of all Trades, will face off.
