Female students from Cape Naturaliste College had a sports class with a difference on December 5.
The school held a surf excursion for the second year and 30 students participated.
Students from Year 7 to 10 took to Smiths Beach where they had a lesson with Yallingup Surf School.
Cape Naturaliste College outdoor education teacher Gareth Bowles said surfing provided a great outlet for students.
“This excursion is tapping in to awesome marine environment that is on our doorstep,” he said.
“Surfing is about more than just physical activity.
“It promotes mental well-being and raises self-esteem.”
Mr Bowles said the excursion aimed to get students out of their comfort zones.
“The students had a great time and have been able to experience the degree of difficultly involved with surfing,” he said.
“Sometimes in life people are afraid to fail or do hard things.
“But that’s life, we want to give the girls a chance to challenge themselves, improve their resilience and improve their self-worth by giving something a go and surfing 100 per cent does that.”
