T20 cricket
With the Christmas and New Year’s break over it is time to return to the exciting clashes in the Busselton T20 competition.
The Bin Chooks battled the Jack of all Trades last night and as the match was played after the paper deadline, you will have to look on the Facebook page for those results.
Tonight has the Swingers playing the Lemons while the Heavy Rollers have the bye.
The action takes place at the Vasse Sporting Complex from 4.45pm and is worth bringing the family along with a picnic to enjoy the quintessential Australian summer sport.
Corporate South West is now taking nominations for next season and with a maximum of 10 teams available and three more teams already signed up there is only one spot left. Call Michael on 0420 576 029 if you wish to nominate a team.
Now some of you love test cricket and some prefer one day cricket. We all know how good 20/20 is to watch and play. What is next? The Margaret River Super 6’s is here and well worth nominating a team.
Eight player squads; six players per team and five overs per innings. Games are finished in half an hour. A minimum of three games per team with finals and then the grand final all centralised at Gloucester Park. March 4 will see the inaugural tournament being run and won. Five teams have already signed up with five more spots available.
The Reece Plumbing Renegades are the first corporate team to join, while the Finbats have registered and are made up of a bunch of mates playing in the Margaret River Chicken Treat Big Bash T20 competition.
A betting syndicate called The Thoroughbreds will have a punt on themselves as will Kurt’s Krusaders.
This will be a fantastic day of cricket in a carnival atmosphere. With a licensed bar, food and some bang crash cricket, the crowd will enjoy the games as much as the players.
Email corporatesw@outlook.com or call Michael on 0420 576 029 to register your team or to find out more information.
The surf spot
By Joe Jordanoff
A STRONG field of local surfers are taking their A game to the world stage this month and will be competing in the World Qualifying Series on the East Coast of Australia.
The talented surfers are Jack Thomas, Kael Walsh, Felix Leaver and Josh Caitlan who are all from the Yallingup and Dunsborough area.
Having already tasted competitive success in the state and Australian titles, this group are transitioning into the next level of contests which are the perfect stepping stone into the big time.
The qualifying series has events all over the world and those with enough points at the end of the tour get selected to compete on the main world tour the following year.
The local rippers will be kicking their tour off in Sydney at the Carve Pro, followed by events at the Gold Coast, Cabarita and Boomerang beach.
Forecast: Thursdays will be SW onshore and a 2 metre swell. Friday should be clean and offshore early with a 1.6m swell.
Saturday looks good with clean ESE winds and a 1.5m swell while Sundays a bit smaller but still offshore. Large swell alert for Monday which should be up around 3m and potential SE winds.
Hotspot: Shallows on Saturday.
Twilight tennis
BUSSELTON Tennis Club’s Sunday twilight social play last weekend was supported by an enthusiastic group of local members and South West visitors who made the most of the cool, afternoon breeze to help them chase down the fuzzy yellow ball.
For the next two Sundays, January 14 and 21 the tennis club invite any interested social players to join them for between sets of play between 4pm and 6.30pm. Register your interest at the Marine Terrace clubhouse on either Sunday by 3.30pm. Alternative times visitors can play during 2018 are Wednesdays from 9.30am-12 noon and Saturdays from 1.30pm to 5pm.
Fishing
By Roz Cummings
THERE have been some epic days out on the water, with boatmen catching good sized snapper and dhufish, however no huge sizes have been reported in the last two weeks.
The shorelines have been busy with plenty of people catching herring, skippy, whiting and the odd bream during the holidays.
January has seen divers get their fill of crays as well as the odd fish. The visibility has been good along with low swells which equates to some epic diving.
Marron season opened at midday on Monday running until 12pm Monday, February 5. Make sure you have the legal equipment like a marron snare, a gauge to measure and a licence from The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. Marron fishing is banned within 300 metres upstream from Margaret River, 50m downstream of the town bridge and upstream from the 10 Mile Brook Junction to protect the threatened Hairy Marron species.
