Two Dunsborough volunteers have been acknowledged for their contributions to the community by the City of Busselton.
Vanessa Sabatini was announced as the Australia Day WA Community Citizen of the Year Award recipient and Bob Jarvis was named the Australia Day WA Senior Community Citizen of the Year at today’s celebrations in Dunsborough.
Ms Sabatini was recognised for her inclusive and collaborative efforts to bring the community together to acknowledge and celebrate cultural diversity.
Ms Sabatini founded the Busselton and Dunsborough Multicultural Group and leads the organistion for the South West Harmony Festival.
City of Busselton mayor Grant Henley said the festival had gone from strength to strength since its inception.
“The success of this event is, in no small part, thanks to Vanessa’s enthusiasm and hard work – I applaud her for her vision,” he said.
“Vanessa, has been an important unifying figure in our community.
“She has helped to create a cohesive community where cultural differences can be understood and in fact celebrated. In this day and age when tolerance and acceptance is often challenged, this is a truly important achievement.”
Mr Jarvis was recognised for his voluntary leadership in several community groups and committees.
Mr Jarvis was a member of the planning committee which informed the construction at Ray Village.
He became a member of the Eagle Bay Volunteer Fire Brigade in 2000 and served as captain of the brigade for more than 10 years.
During this time, he played a significant role in the construction of Eagle Bay fire station.
Mr Jarvis is also known for his environmental work - particularly his commitment to protecting and preserving Meelup Regional Park.
Mr Henley said Mr Jarvis was an excellent support to the City of Busselton’s Environment team.
“Bob’s knowledge of the park’s history and natural environment is invaluable and we are fortunate that he has always been willing to share this knowledge with others including school groups and volunteers,” he said.
The Australia Day WA Community Citizen of the Year Awards are presented by local government and recognise individuals or organisations making an outstanding effort to contribute to the advancement and well-being of a community.
