TRYstars prepares kids for Busselton Triathlon

Registrations are open for the junior triathlon participation program, TRYstars.

TRYstars is open to children aged seven to 12 and run by the Busselton Triathlon Club.

The program teaches swimming, biking and running skills.

TRYstars runs for nine weeks in the lead up to SunSmart Kids Triathlon Busselton.

Busselton TRYstars coach Andrew Hembroff encouraged children to take advantage of the opportunity to prepare for a triathlon.

“We give them the skills and training so when it comes to the event they blitz it,” he said.

“Triathlons are a sport for life, there aren’t many sports like this that you can do from when you are young to when you are over 50 or older.”

Each week, participants take part in game-based sessions involving a swim game, a ride game and a run game.

Children earn rewards as they achieve skill milestones.

Charlotte Mitchell, 8, participated in the program in 2017

She said the training helped her complete in Ironkids with ease, and she looked forward to the SunSmart Kids Triathlon Busselton.

“It wasn’t hard at all because of the training – I thought the swim was short,” she said.

“I did TRYstars because it sounded fun, and my parents said it would be fun.

“It was fun, so I am doing it again.”

To participate, children need to be able to swim 50 metres and ride a bike unaided without the use of trainer wheels.

The TRYstars program begins on Wednesday, March 7.
