The SuperFoiler Grand Prix starts in Busselton today and Geographe Bay provides the ultimate playground, according to the visiting athletes.
The SuperFoiler is the latest invention in three person crew on-board sailing, and vessels can reach speeds up to 80 kilometres per hour
The six SuperFoilers are in town as part of an Australia-wide series and nine races will be held in Busselton over the weekend.
WA-bred sailor and tech2 skipper Luke Parkinson said Busselton was built for hosting this style of race.
“There is more space and we can really sail these boats to their full potential whereas some other venues we’ve been to, we had to manage how fast we go because we were more confined,” he said.
“Busselton is actually quite famous for the moderate conditions and flat water, that teamed with the long jetty that spectators can stand right next to where we are racing and it basically creates a natural amphitheater for our sport. I think it is the first time people can be so close to the boats going these high speeds.
“So far everyone involved has said it is one of their favourite locations and we haven't even hit the water yet.”
City of Busselton mayor Grant Henley said the city was delighted to represent WA and host the Grand Prix.
“We’re lucky enough to live in a very special part of the world and nothing gives us greater pleasure than showing it off,” he said.
“For spectators, the Busselton Jetty and Foreshore provide a supreme viewing platform, with many vantage points to witness the world’s best sailors in action.”
