LAST weekend young sailors from Mounts Bay Sailing Club, Rockingham and Dunsborough competed in the annual Minnow State Championships held at Quindalup.
Twenty-four sailors, aged six to 11, took to the water in the Open, B division and Novice fleet.
The three-day carnival was held in brilliant sunshine and calm seas, although a bit more breeze would have been ideal.
In spite of a cancellation of the last race on Monday morning, due to the wind dropping out, leaving a rather lumpy sea and hot conditions, the competitors all enjoyed themselves, and fought some close races.
Eight races of varying lengths saw the single-handed skippers improve enormously over the weekend, and the camaraderie and constant handling of their boats paid dividends in the boat handling and racing skills of the young sailors.
Volunteers were kept busy keeping the food and liquid up to the sailors and spectators and lifelong friendships were formed.
