The Bureau of Meteorology will deploy technicians to fix the wind indicator on the Busselton Jetty after residents raised safety concerns.
Resident Geoff Dickson uses the data from the wind indicator daily as a keen surf skier and boatman.
He said the wind indicator hadn’t been providing information for a month.
“This is the only source of information available to local folks as to what the wind on the water is doing,” he said.
“Not only is it inconvenient, like is it a good day to put the boat in the water, It could well be dangerous.”
Mr Dickson said he and others had contacted the bureau but didn’t receive any response.
“It is a fairly basic service offered by the bureau,” he said.
“It isn’t been looked after and affects large numbers who use the water daily.” he said.
A Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson said the weather station hadn’t been reporting due to an issue with the mains power supply at the Underwater Observatory.
“The Bureau has been in regular contact with the Observatory to attempt to resolve this problem,” they said.
“We have now been informed the mains power supply issue has been resolved, so the weather station is collecting data again.
“A separate minor technical issue means that there are issues with the data being received by the Bureau, so we will be sending technicians to the site next week.”
The spokesperson said the wind indicator was being maintained.
“This weather station is serviced annually, with the most recent check conducted in November 2017,” they said.
“This involves thorough checks of all the equipment to ensure data is being recorded accurately.
“We deploy technicians to repair equipment faults as needed.”
Mr Dickson said it was vital to have accurate data in Busselton from a recreational and safety point of view.
“The wind indicators in Bunbury, Cape Naturaliste and the airport are not a reflection of what is happening in our bay,” he said.
“There was no local weather data for the SuperFoiler, which relied on wind, for stuff like Ironman you need to what the wind is doing especially at the end of the jetty.
“Can you imagine if there was no wind data for the Perth boating community for a month?”
