Residents have called on the state government to install a roundabout at Fairway Drive and the Busselton Bypass after another serious accident occurred at the intersection last month.
David Parker said the main problem was when the intersection was busy, cars which turned right onto the bypass were deceived by speeding vehicles.
Mr Parker said it was okay when traffic travelled at 80 kilometres per hour but it was deceiving when traffic sped at 100kmh.
“I do not think dropping the speed limit any lower would make any difference, people are going to speed, tourists want to get down to Margaret River as soon as possible,” he said.
Vasse MLA Libby Mettam said there had been 30 crashes at the intersection from January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2017.
“This intersection ranked fourth on the list of the RAC’s riskiest intersection for inadequate crossing or turning opportunity,” she said.
“There was an expectation that this relatively small project would progress under Main Roads as part of core business and I would be hopeful that would not change because there was a change of government.”
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said additional road treatments to address the safety needs at the intersection were being investigated.
Ms Saffioti said the design process has identified the need to acquire private land, and has noted that a number of services will be impacted.
“The acquisition of land and relocation and modification of services are underway, and are set to be completed by the end of 2018.
“Funding for construction of this roundabout will be considered as part of the future budget processes.”
