In the opening round of the South West Netball Football League season the Busselton Magpies played at home against the Eaton Boomers.
The 18s Magpies side were the first team to take to the court. After a nervous first five minutes with multiple turnovers for both teams, the Magpies settled and took the lead, ending the first quarter 14-9.
Confident passing and steady shooting extended the Magpies’ lead to 30-17 at half-time.
The third quarter showed some excellent teamwork by the Magpies as their whole court defensive pressure extended their lead to 50-21.
The Boomers fought back in the last quarter but the Magpies remained calm, taking the match 61-33.
The Magpies Reserves started strongly in their game, finishing the first quarter level pegging.
They lost momentum in the second quarter and a combination of unforced errors and a lack of smooth play left them trailing by nine at half-time.
A few changes were made, highlighting the Magpies’ versatility, which will put them in good stead for games to come.
With some renewed energy they dug deep to come within seven goals of the Boomers, finishing 42-49. Honourable mentions for best players were given to Claire Garnaut and Ash Farmer.
The Open Magpies dusted off the cobwebs with a convincing win over the Boomers.
Full court defense by the flock caused multiple defensive turnovers, which the Magpies capitalised on. Borrinelli, mistaken for Laura Geitz by some onlookers, dominated the back line, while Hancock took the intercept speccys down the mid and defense end with her newly acquired football skills.
Her feathers never ruffled, chief Bratton kept her cool sinking the majority of the Maggie's goals in a 72-36 win for the defending premiers.
The Magpies play round two at the Geographe Leisure Centre with the 18s playing the Harvey Bulls on Saturday, April 14 at 1.15pm, and the seniors playing on Sunday, April 15.
Reserves play the Harvey Brunswick Leschenault Lions at 10.30am and the League team play at 12 noon, in what is sure to be a thrilling rematch of the grand final.
