Cowaramup’s Fraser Oates scooped both major individual awards when the Busselton-Margaret River Cricket Association held its first windup at the new Barnard Park Pavilion on Saturday night.
Oates polled 12 votes from the umpires to win the prestigious House Medal as the A-grade fairest and best player. Oates also earned 663 points to take out the A-grade cricketer of the year, sponsored and awarded on the night by Vasse MLA Libby Mettam.
St Mary’s Ed Moulton was runner-up cricketer of the year on 557 points, followed by Ben Clarke on 524 points.
YOBS did the team double by winning both the Yates Shield for the A-grade minor premiership and also the Barnard Cup for their narrow A-grade grand final victory over Dunsborough.
YOBS president Matty Braid accepted the Yates Shield from David Yates, a grandson of Dr Percy Yates who first donated the Yates Shield in 1924, while YOBS A-grade captain Ben Payne received the Barnard Cup from Anne Fennessy, a descendant of George Barnard Senior who first donated the Barnard Cup in 1915.
BMRCA life member Barry House was master of ceremonies at the wind-up for the 32nd time.
Dunsborough, captained by Ian Purcell, were awarded the Barnard Shield for their B-grade premiership win over YOBS, and also won the Penfold Shield, captained by Andy Mahoney, for their C-grade grand final win over Augusta.
Dunsborough president Mat Lepidi had the honour of claiming the Bovell Bowl for overall club attainment for the fourth year in a row.
Current president Pieter Bresser was acknowledged for his long contribution to local cricket, and in particular for his work at Country Week over the past decade, when he was inducted as the 26th life member of the cricket association.
Fraser Oates won both the A-grade batting aggregate and batting average trophies, while St Marys import Ed Moulton claimed the A-grade bowling aggregate trophy.
Cowaramup’s Buddhika won the A-grade bowling average trophy and Hawks newcomer Shane Joyce took the A-Grade fielding trophy.
Troyden Thorp, 16, was a standout winner of the Ron Bell most improved junior trophy, the richest cash prize of the night, winning $300.
Dunsborough’s Mark Natale, who took 5-4 in an A-grade semi-final, and YOBS’ James Trewren, who took 8-18 in the preliminary rounds against Vasse, were named joint winners of the most outstanding performance trophy. Dunsborough’s Nick Ritchie was a popular winner of the most improved trophy.
James Trewren was named the B-grade cricketer of the year trophy on 673 points, followed by Hawks’ Jordan Stanbury on 597 points and St Marys’ Todd Hartnett on 510 points.
Hartnett and Dunsborough’s Ben Christmas won the B-grade batting aggregate and batting average trophies respectively, while Trewren claimed both the B-grade bowling aggregate and bowling average awards. YOBS’ Jed Kemp was the B-Grade outstanding fielder.
Augusta brothers Braden and Tyson Warnke were the outstanding C-grade cricketers, Braden amassing 788 points to win the cricketer of the year and Tyson tallying 762 points to be the runner-up.
Dunsborough veteran Ray Pes claimed the C-grade batting aggregate and batting average trophies for his achievement in scoring 477 runs at an average of 79.5.
Braden Warnke also claimed the C-grade bowling aggregate and bowling average trophies, while young Cowaramup cricketer Finn Barrett-Lennard won the C-grade fielder of the year.
