Riding for the Disabled Association of WA South West Centre recently celebrated 40 years of helping people with a disability enjoy the benefits of of equestrian based activities.
The association began in 1978 by a handful of volunteers which has now seen more than 2000 clients enjoy the challenge, independence, friendship and laughter that Riding for the Disabled offers.
Riding for the Disabled chairperson Bridget Green said on the day that the association could not have continued for so long without the help of community businesses.
New and old supporters and sponsors were invited to the event to say thank you for their assistance. The centre’s volunteers were thanked on the day as they manage all aspects of the operation, including grounds maintenance, horse management, assisting clients and fundraising.
Three of the founding members were given special mention with Federal member for Forrest Nola Marino presenting Maud Stanley, Olga Green and Jean Lishman with a commemorative clock with personal inscription to mark their brilliant lifetime achievement.
Jeanette Thomas was also recognised with a life membership which was presented by Bunbury MLA Don Punch.
Guests were also treated to a parade of the centre’s horses who are the stars of the organisation.
The centre looks to the future now as it hopes to expand its services to provide even more opportunities for clients within the disability, mental health and wellbeing sectors. The centre is also searching for more horses that suit the needs of the Riding for the Disabled clients.
The occassion was helped put together by sponsors John Lucas at Woolworths Plaza who provided food and Derek from Totally Sound who provided the stage, ramp and sound system.
