Port Geographe Marina is set to be revitalised after the City of Busselton received more than $180,000 in state government grants to improve recreational boating facilities.
The City of Busselton has been allocated $15,285 for six additional ladders to Old Dunsborough and Abbey Boat Ramp finger jetties, and $165,000 for the Port Geographe Boating Facility.
The grant for Port Geographe will fund the upgrade of one of the three finger jetties at the marina.
The funding was designated in the latest round of the Recreational Boating Facilities Scheme.
City of Busselton mayor Grant Henley said the new finger jetty would be a floating pontoon style, similar to those constructed at the Augusta Boat Harbour.
“Provision of a floating pontoon finger jetty will improve the amenity and safety of the existing facility,” he said.
”This injection of funding is significant and very gratefully received.
“It reflects the importance the state government and the community places on boating safety and the value of recreational boating as a regional draw card.”
Vasse MLA Libby Mettam congratulated the City of Busselton on the grant and the plans to improve the accessibility and safety of the finger jetties.
“Boating facilities in the region are essential for recreational boat users and also used and enjoyed by visitors to the region,” she said.
“Maintaining these jetties is equally important for our local Volunteer Marine Rescue groups based in Busselton and Dunsborough who provide a fantastic service to the community.”
Transport minister Rita Saffioti said she looked forward to seeing the project progress.
“Upgrading recreational boating facilities adds to the amenity of communities close to WA’s beautiful waterways, and in some cases assist with local tourism and employment,” she said.
“Boating and fishing is a way of life for many Western Australians and these grants are an acknowledgment of that local culture.”
