WA’s bus industry will no longer be required to pay a levy for on-demand trips to Perth (for vehicles with more than 12 seats) after the industry “fought tooth and nail” to stop the levy.
The state government wanted to temporarily impose the levy to fund a voluntary taxi plate buy back scheme which would compensate Perth’s taxi industry.
Busselton bus operator Ray Gannaway said the state government had actually just given back to the industry what they already had, no levy.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said as part of their ongoing consultation with on-demand transport industry stakeholders, a decision was made not to impose the levy on vehicles with more than 12 seats.
She said this would ensure that on-demand charter trips undertaken in buses, such as school excursions, as well as tour passenger services, would not be subject to the passenger fare levy.
