Surfers from across Western Australia have relished the clean and consistent winter waves last weekend at the final event of the WA Pro Am Series at Flat Rocks in Geraldton.
Dunsborough’s Ian Ainsworth was in great form, dominating the over 50 legends division and earned a second place in the over 45 grand masters division.
Utilising his tall frame to leverage strong backhand turns, Ainsworth demolished every wave that came his way to claim his first state championship and book his spot into the Western Australian team for the upcoming national titles.
“It's been a very long time since I have surfed this wave,” Ainsworth said.
“It was a great last minute call to pack up the car and head north into the sunshine and pumping waves, I am stoked,”
Highlighting the action was Margaret River's Jack Haslau, who surfed with precision and innovation to win the blue ribbon open men's division and claimed his maiden open men's state championship.
Haslau displayed a full repertoire of new school manoeuvres and powerful backhand turns to drop the highest score of the open men's final with 8.37.
“The waves have been pumping for the whole event, and it is great to win my first open title,” Haslau said.
“I won the Under-18 state junior titles last year and I am stoked to back that up with a win in the opens and head away for my first Australian Surf Festival.”
Surfing WA Events manager Justin Majeks wished all the WA WA State Team representatives the best of luck at the upcoming festival.
