Create a cosy reading nook

The passionate bibliophiles among us know there is no greater sound than the crack of opening a new book.

Curl up: Finding the perfect chair is the key to a good reading nook. Choose comfort over looks and snuggle in.

Chilled winter days call for snuggling under a blanket and escaping reality (or delving deeper into it, depending on your tastes) and curling up with a good book.

Creating a comfortable reading nook however, is no accident.

There are a few ways you can make sure you enjoy hours of bliss as you bunker down and read.

Let there be light: Natural light is the best to read by, however on dark and rainy days, it's a good idea to have a lamp on hand as back up.

First, start with the seating.

Whether you want to curl up on a couch or sit straighter in an armchair, it’s important to find the seat that suits you best.

Choose a chair that allows you to stretch out and relax as you read or make sure you have space for a footstool.

So please, oh please, we beg, we pray, go throw your TV set away, and in its place you can install, a lovely bookshelf on the wall. Then fill the shelves with lots of books.

Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Leather may be a practical choice for cleaning, but can feel a little slippery when seated for a long time.

Look at fabrics such as velour and and corduroy for maximum warmth and comfort.

Allow room for a table at the side.

A hot cup of tea or a couple of spare books on hand will always be a welcome addition.

You will need adequate light.

If you are not lucky enough to be able to nab a spot near a window, you’ll need a lamp or a bright ceiling light.

A reading nook is all about feeling comfortable, safe and warm. Surround yourself with things that make you feel that way.

Ensure the space is clear of clutter and dust, which may distract you.

But ensure you add in personal touches like photos in frames or bunches of flowers if these are the things that make your heart sing.

Top the space off with a rug for your lap.

Sitting in one place for so long can make your body relax and your temperature drop, so a rug is a great way to stay cosy – and it can be used to decorate the chair when you’re not there.

An electric rug is also useful when it is very cold, or better yet – position yourself close to a crackling fire to really settle your senses and enable you to concentrate on the story.
