Dunsborough’s Sam Huxley will represent WA for the second time when he takes the field at the National Schools Championship.
Sam was selected for the WA Schools AFL 15s Team, which follows his spot in the 12s side three years ago.
The Georgiana Molloy Anglican School student had to compete with fellow players from throughout the state at a series of trials in Perth.
A squad of 45 up-and-coming stars was cut to a final team after a three-day camp in Point Peron.
The 15-year-old said it would have been difficult for selectors to decide on the state side.
“I was surprised to make it as there was such a good variety of players,” he said.
The Dunsborough Sharks mid-fielder will travel to Adelaide for the School Sports and Department of Education competition.
He said it was a honour to play for WA and he looked forward to taking on their arch-rivals, Victoria.
“It is pretty amazing and exhilarating,” he said.
“I am proud as well to represent my state not only once but twice.
“Victoria are the strongest side but I am hoping that we will go well against them.”
Sam said the competition was a great opportunity to further his football development.
“This is a big step in my footy career and future,” he said.
“AFL is the long-term goal and I am considering moving to Perth to pursue that.
“I think that will definitely help me to go further, I’d love to go as far as I can with it.”
Three young footballers from the Augusta Margaret River region will join Sam in the black and gold in South Australia.
Kade Dittmar, Mia Dronow and Oscar Armstrong have also been selected for WA.
Kade said it was rewarding to be included in the side.
“I think the overall number of tryouts was something like 600 players, so it’s a good feeling to be part of the team, it’s been a lot of hard work,” he said.
Mia said she was looking forward to taking part in the competition.
“I’m looking forward to travelling over there again and playing some good games with the WA team,” she said.
The championships will run from July 21 to 29.
