Busselton Jetty Inc’s youth volunteers, The Jetty Crew, are in the running for a state-wide community award.
The group have been nominated for the RAC Volunteering Award in the Western Australian Regional Achievement and Community Awards.
The voluntary youth leadership program was introduced by Busselton Jetty Inc in August 2017.
It has become an annual program for 16 to 21 year old’s and provides formal leadership training, dive qualifications, project and event management training. The aim of the program is to promote friendship, community involvement and a sense of purpose.
Busselton Jetty Inc chief executive officer Lisa Shreeve said the Jetty Crew program instilled passion in youth about environmental issues, marine environment health and sense of community in a safe, friendly and supported environment.
She said the young volunteers helped to ensure the Busselton Jetty would be enjoyed by future generations.
“Members of the Jetty Crew are inspirational role models to other young people in the Busselton community, particularly their peers at their respective schools,” she said.
As part of the Jetty Crew program, the 12 volunteer members are expected to commit four hours per month to undertake their formal leadership training, dive qualifications, project and event management training.
The Jetty Crew have been involved in a number of initiatives including volunteering in Pile Rehabilitation Dives, fundraising for the Busselton Jetty Environmental Fund as well as coordinating and hosting the Twilight Jetty Fest.
They have also assisted at a number of community events such as the Festival of Busselton’s Sandcastle Competition, 30th Anniversary of Busselton Jetty Inc and Super Blue Blood Moon.
Ms Shreeve said The Jetty Crew had demonstrated a high level of commitment and dedication during the running of these events.
“These achievements have not only benefited Busselton Jetty Inc but also the local community,” Ms Shreeve said.
WA Regional Achievement and Community Award nominees will be judged on August 31. Finalists will be presented and winners announced on October 19.
