It’s raining crocs in Katherine

That’s four in just eight days, in the supposedly quiet croc season when the water is chilly.

NT Parks and Wildlife rangers from Katherine are heading to the trap this evening to retrieve the latest catch.

It was the same trap near Taylors Park Boat Ramp where the record-breaking 4.7 metre monster was caught just a week ago.

Although the latest catch is still to be officially measured, rangers say it is believed to be about 3.5 metres long.

Two crocodiles were trapped in the region of the Katherine River early last week about 60km from Katherine.

On the weekend, a 3.4 metre male was trapped not far away at Flora Nature Park, again south-west of the town.

As well a large four metre crocodile had been spotted in the river adjacent to the town itself on late last week.

“It is a belief that when it is cold crocs go off the bite, but this year we have been catching them fairly consistently,” ranger Burke said. 

“Usually, their metabolism slows down in the cold weather and they don’t hit up the traps, but the crocs are still hungry,” he said. 

“People need to be croc wise and stay out of the river.”

A record number of crocodiles have been caught in the Katherine River this year, and about 200 already across the Top End this year.
