Three local junior surfers have qualified for the elite ISA World Junior Championships in California this year.
Yallingup young gun Emma Cattlin has been chosen to compete in the Under 16 girls division along with fellow south west riders, Cy Cox and Seth Van Haeften from Margaret River.
The surfers results from last year’s Australian Junior Titles in NSW, where Cattlin placed third overall, earned them the place on the team.
There are only 12 competitors on the whole team so to have three from the South West is a huge achievement and will be a valuable experience in the USA.
The surfing team has been bolstered with the appointment of Surfing WA’s State head coach and competition veteran, Mike McAuliffe, as a co-coach for Team Australia.
National high performance director Kim Crane said the world championships were a great opportunity for young surfers to improve their skills and complete internationally.
“Our junior athletes and their families and support teams invest so heavily for these competition opportunities, so we can’t wait to see them show the world what they can do on the international stage,” he said.
International Surfing Association’s World Junior Championships run from October 26 to November 4 at Huntington Beach, south of Los Angeles.

Thursday will see an epic three metre west swell with clean offshore east winds.
Friday will also be good with NE winds and a 2.2m swell.
The weekend will see winds turning to the north and a 2.5m swell and an onshore SW change on Sunday.
