A-Frames surf break at Smiths Beach served up challenging lefts and rights for round four of the Yallingup Boardriders juniors’ competition on Father’s Day – dad’s were well rewarded with chocolate gifts.
Six divisions took on the conditions without hesitation and ignored a cold morning to enjoy a late afternoon glass-off.
Mike Plowman of Surf Lifestyle Performance, headed up the judging panel to lend his international experience and expertise.
With Plowman in attendance, parents and grommets had the benefit to learn about the current judging criteria and what judges are looking for in a competition.
Plowman shared his knowledge on what surfers earn points for in their heats and how the judging scale is adjusted to conditions.
Yallingup Boardriders vice president Timm Uros said as a club, they were committed to developing and training their members in the art of competitive surfing.
“It is so valuable to have the groms learn about the judging process so that they can work on those aspects in their heats,” he said.
“We had mums, dads and young groms take the judging chair to learn those skills first hand”.
