Busselton Jetty Inc and the Underwater Explorers will be hosting a Beach Clean Up Day from 9am on Sunday, October 14 joining hundreds of volunteers across WA to collect and record marine debris.
The project is being run by Tangaroa Blue Foundation, which is an Australian not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the removal and prevention of marine debris.
BJI marine biologist Sophie Teede said marine debris was one of the major environmental issues worldwide.
“There are 18,000 pieces of plastic estimated to float in every square kilometre of ocean and 633 species worldwide, including 77 Australian species, are impacted by marine debris,” she said.
“We are calling all those who love and use our oceans’ to help us in the clean-up of debris found above and below the water’s surface.
“The clean-up data collected will help track litter to its source and prevent it from entering the waste stream and harming our environment and marine life.”
