There are renewed calls for the region’s pet owners to display greater responsibility for their animals after 53 Western Ringtail Possum joeys were rescued in a five day period.
Dunsborough and Busselton Wildlife Care Inc president Sasha Boundy said it was a stressful week ensuring all the joeys had carers and supplies.
“It was shocking – crazy – more than 40 of them were attacked by cats, either that or their Mum was attacked and killed, or neighbours rescued the joeys,” she said.
“Eight were from dog attacks, another three were just found on their own on the ground.”
Ms Boundy, who is personally caring for 13 possums, said people were not being responsible pet owners, especially at night.
“I would encourage all owners to go out with their pet at night and watch them,” she said.
“Night is when possums are looking food and most vulnerable along fence lines. They have nowhere to hide.
“It is also breeding season so all the babies are coming out and are easy prey. Possums can’t fight back they are very docile.”
Ms Boundy’s calls are timely with GeoCatch hosting a community workshop on the topic on Wednesday October 24.
The 2018 Pet Ownership Survey results for the Geographe region will also be presented at event.
