Busselton Tennis Club’s weekly competition Scroungers was played last Thursday, November 1 with a strong complement of players. The two teams men’s doubles competition is jointly team and individually scored. The reduced four set, first to six games, tiebreak on five games all and short deuce format works well for the varied age group playing according to mid-week competition organiser, Jim Creedon.
The social competitiveness of the grass-court competition, together with constant lighthearted banter and a keen eye on the weekly prize donated by Geographe Hardware might have something to do with Scrounger’s popularity since it’s initiation three years ago by Grayden Clack. Whatever the attraction, visitors are most welcome to join in by contacting Jim on 0490 072 852, Jim@bsnfp.com.au.
Last week’s results were: A Melbourne Cup field of 24 players turned up and like the Melbourne Cup runners the form was mixed. In what would have to be the closest result in history, the Red team scraped home by a short half head. Scores were 12 sets all with Red winning 110 games to Greens 108 games. The closeness of the game is highlighted by five sets going down to tiebreaks. Winner of the day was Les Cousins, who won all four sets, 24 games for and 10 against. Runner-up was Bernie Masters who also won all four sets, 24 games for and 18 against.
