Busselton’s youth programs have received a generous boost thanks to the Lions Club of Busselton.
In October, the Mail reported a number of vulnerable youth were accessing services at the City of Busselton’s Youth and Community Activities Building.
At this time, Vasse MLA Libby Mettam appealed to community organisations to see if they could offer any support.
The Lions Club responded by contributing $3000.
Lions secretary Philip Caunt said the donation was in line with the club’s objectives to support youth.
“We always try to help out when we can. The city has done a great deal to support youth with the foreshore precinct and we are happy to help,” he said.
Ms Mettam said it was a very generous donation that would help support the great work carried out by the city’s youth development officer, Angela Griffin, and her team.
“The Lions Club do a fantastic job raising money for the community, and it’s great that they have been able to respond to my request to support the local youth who have been attending the Youth Activity Centre on the foreshore,” she said.
“At the meeting we also discussed the potential for a young Lions Club (the Leos Club) to be established at the youth centre, a club which could be a vehicle for our youth to initiate their own goals and projects in the community under a club structure.”
The centre provides youth with fresh fruit two nights a week, and hosts a cooking activity on Fridays and sausage sizzle on Saturdays.
City of Busselton community services manager Maxine Palmer said the city’s youth services team planned to use the funding to buy cooking associated equipment to support the weekly cooking program.
“The funding will enable the program to extend the range of menu and types of cooking undertaken to up skill youth in their cooking knowledge and techniques in the kitchen,” she said.
“The youth centre look forward to increasing the creativity of the cooking provided with the additional equipment that will be purchased.
“The Busselton Youth Centre thank the Busselton Lions Club for their valued support and look forward to other opportunities of working together on future youth initiatives.”
