Busselton sea cadet Dylan Williams is about to set off on an adventure up North with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
Thanks to support from the Lions Club of Busselton, Dylan is about to board his first flight which will take him to the Karijini National Park in the Pilbara.
While he is there he will take part in a seniors program which will see him learn more advanced skills to assist with emergency services and marine rescue groups.
The WA cadets program is run by DFES to provide high school students with an opportunity to train in bush fire brigades, fire and rescue services, state emergency services and volunteer marine rescue services.
As part of his cadetship, 15-year old Dylan has worked with the Busselton Volunteer Marine Rescue Group for three years on the water and in the control tower.
“It has been a great experience to be out on the water on the weekends helping out and to volunteer,” he said.
Dylan was selected to take part in the seniors program which will allow him to learn more advanced marine rescue skills.
“It will also allow me to get my skippers ticket and to drive the boats,” he said.
During his time with the Busselton Volunteer Marine Rescue Group, Dylan has been involved in marine rescues in Geographe Bay including one which involved a police boat from Perth.
“The rescue teams were out in Geographe Bay trying to locate someone and I was in the tower with the communications team,” he said.
