Nominations for the 2019 Busselton Jetty Crew, an exciting future leader’s program for young people aged from 16-21, are now open.
The program provides formal leadership, project and event management training as well as self-management skills.
Busselton Jetty Inc chairperson Jenny Sheehan said the aim of the program was to promote friendship, community involvement and a sense of purpose.
“We want to instill passion in the youth about environmental awareness and marine conservation, promoting the preservation of the 153-year-old jetty for future generations to enjoy,” she said.
“Being a jetty crew member provides an opportunity to experience the past, appreciate the present and be a part of the future of our community.
“Some of the initiatives the jetty crew will be involved in are visiting other attractions, hosting meetings, managing events and educating other students.”
“Throughout the year, crew members that show an outstanding level of dedication and commitment will be given the opportunity to complete an Open Water Dive Course.”
Past crew member Bianca Gervasi said she loved being part of the inaugural group.
“We got to participate in some amazing opportunities we otherwise wouldn’t have like sailing on the Leeuwin, pile rehabilitation dives, organising community events, tree planting days and visiting other tourist attractions like Perth Zoo and Dolphin Discovery Centre,” she said.
“I’ve learnt important life skills for my future such as leadership, organisation and business and have been lucky enough to secure a traineeship at the jetty from the program.”
