The Busselton Tennis Club triumphed over Dunsborough in round one of the annual Whittaker Cup, played on November 28 at the BTC, which saw the home side with an emphatic 13 sets to 3 result.
The men’s tennis event is now in its third year and was named in memory of David Whittaker who had been a member of both clubs.
After the first round of matches it was two sets all but then Busselton powered ahead to win 11 sets in the remaining three rounds.
Key contributors to the victory were Garry McDonald, Drew O’Neill and Glen Young who won all of their matches.
Wayne Richter, Doug Hutchison, Jim Creedon and Geoff Allen won three, while for Dunsborough Paul Moss won two and Brian Walker, David Murrish and Jim Davies posted one win each.
Busselton held tough to win the close matches.
Geoff Allen partnered Drew O’Neill to defeat Greg Banfield and John Stewart 7-5 and then teamed with Garry McDonald to clinch another close one against John Stewart and Allan Shepperd 7-5.
Mick Reilly and Wayne Richter put the icing on the cake with a 6-1 victory in the last contest of the day.
A return tie will be played in February when Dunsborough will be out for redemption on their favoured home hard courts. The combined scores over the two ties will decide the 2018/19 season winner.
