With only one round left to play before we have our mid season break over Christmas, we look back fondly on what has been a fantastic start to our inaugural season as an affiliated Touch Football Australia club.
We have welcomed so many new players to touch football this season, and it has been surprising, but fantastic to see the standard of play rise to such a high level, and so much quicker than anyone ever anticipated.
Some patterns have started forming in regards to the results, but the scores haven’t always told the full story. There have been a number of quality games, and the evenness of the competition is astounding.
Round 9 results saw Band of Misfits 10, defeat You’re It 8. Big Maks accounted for The Untouchables 9-5. The Bush Chooks went down to the Dungbeetles 4-8. And in an absolute nailbiter, the DynoWhites beat the Mariners 8-7, with an after the siren try by Brendan Thomson needed to secure the victory.
Round 10 saw the top two teams playing off, and the game certainly lived up to its lofty expectations.
Second-placed Big Maks, without their key playmaker, took on the undefeated ladder leading Dungbeetles, and with the scores even at half time, the scene was set for a great finish.
The defence of the Big Maks stifled the run of the Dungbeetles for the majority of the game, but in the end, the top team proved too strong, holding on for a 7-6 win.
You’re It, playing without spiritual leader Tegan Harrison, produced one of their best games of the season, beating an undermanned DynoWhites 13-3.
Robert Farmer was as solid as ever, and Duane Baker crossed the stripe an amazing four times in the big win.
Bush Chooks had an impressive 7-4 win over the Untouchables, and Band of Misfits scored 13 times in a high scoring game against the Mariners, who finished on 7. The Bush Chooks outplayed the Untouchables, winning 7-4, with the win largely coming off the back of Jason Collins, who managed to score four times.
At the conclusion of round 9, we had the joy of presenting our first monthly award to the Untouchables.
This new award is presented to the team we determine displays the skill, character and sportsmanship we want to build our club culture on. The prize was a team bar tab at our sponsor Darleen’s.
And finally, a friendly reminder for anyone interested. At the completion of this week’s games, the club will be celebrating the end of the first half of our season at Darleen’s, so come on down a for a well earned drink and to share your favourite memories from the first half of the season.
