Busselton Hospice Care Inc is on the search for its next batch of volunteers.
The not-for-profit will enter its annual recruitment phase next month and will hold information sessions for prospective volunteers.
Busselton Hospice Care Inc volunteer coordinator Rosie Brown said the role of volunteers was to provide emotional and social support to hospice patients and their families.
“It is mostly just listening and providing company – just being present,” she said.
“Some times it may feel like you are doing nothing, but it is actually quite the opposite, you are giving so much.
“You need to be comfortable with grief, loss and other people’s distress, but not take it on.”
Volunteers always work in pairs and are only required to do one shift a week, which is approximately four hours in length.
Volunteer Sandy White said it was a privilege to support families and be present in someone’s end time.
Volunteer Lee Ozarczuk added families were overwhelming thankful for the work of the volunteers.
“A lot of the time it is actually the family you are supporting,” she said.
“When I go home after I shift, I think ‘yeah, I’ve done my bit for the community today’.”
Busselton Hospice Care Inc is hoping to recruit up to 20 fresh faces to its program.
Volunteer recruitment information sessions will be held on February 5 from 5pm to 6pm, and Thursday February 7 from 2pm to 3pm.
