The men’s bowling section of the Dunsborough Districts Country Club fielded eight novices in this year’s novice championship. This is the second year that the men’s section has been successful in recruiting a good number of new bowlers.
One of those new bowlers is Jim Holroyd who came up through the corporate bowls competition and has proven himself a capable bowler. But he is not an orphan. Within these novice rankings each and every one of the new bowlers has shown great ability and will all be a force to reckon with in the future.
Brian Logan and Steve Nicholson played off in the final game. Nicholson had only lost one game and that by one shot to another corporate bowler recruit in Dave Chester. Logan had also lost just one game by four shots to Phil Higgins in what was a great contest.
Thus, the stage was set for a great novice tussle. The final was moved from B rink to A rink and it proved too much of a change for Logan who struggled from the beginning to match Nicholson’s bowls. Meanwhile Nicholson found everything in his favour and consistently drew shots with great precision. In fact, he destroyed Logan in the first few ends, and the result was 21-6.
Club chairman Rob Prentice was the sponsor for the event and acknowledged the skill and talent of all up and coming novice bowlers within the club by saying, “it is an exciting time” for us to see such ability. In receiving his championship Nicholson paid tribute to Logan and commented on the mentors within the club who are all keen and eager to assist their new bowlers to bring their skill levels up.
