The Busselton Tennis Club won back the coveted Whittaker Challenge Cup from Dunsborough after scoring an emphatic 20 sets to 12 win played over two home and away ties.
Busselton went into the decider with a big lead after securing a 13-3 result played on their home grass earlier in the season.
The return matches played on Dunsborough’s favoured hard courts produced a far closer contest with Dunsborough posting a 9-7 win.
Dunsborough fielded a rejigged line-up for the return bout and the inclusion of Pat Mulhearn and Colin Mott proved decisive in the turnaround.
Tony Henry and Mike Howes were also handy additions to their rejuvenated line-up. There were several close matches which proved vital to the final result.
Geoff Allen and Jim Creedon won a clutch match over John Stewart and Jim Davies 7-6 (8-10), while Mike Howes and Brian Walker beat Garry McDonald and Glen Young 7-5.
Mick Reilly and Doug Hutchison got over David Murrish and Tony Henry 6-4.
The evergreen Doug Hutchison was again a major match winner for Busselton as he has been over all three years of the competition.
Busselton won the first Cup in 2017 and Dunsborough held the trophy last year. In this tie each team also fielded a B-grade with Busselton drawing first blood 5 sets to 3.
Alan Robb was the star, posting four wins.
The annual men’s team competition is named in honour of David Whittaker, a past member of both clubs.
