Our first season as an affiliated TFWA club concluded with a fantastic, and rather wet, finals week last Thursday.
In an inclusive format, all finals were based off ladder position, with first and second place playing in the grand final.
All of the other teams played a final game for the chance to consolidate their finishing position, or to climb a spot higher and finish on a high.
The showpiece match for the right to be crowned premiers was a game that lived up to all of the expectations.
Two very highly competitive teams, which spent most of the season near the top of the ladder, in the Dungbeetles and Band of Misfits played out a very close game that again went down to the wire.
Ultimately the Dungbeetles lived up to the lofty standards they had set through the season to win 7-6.
It was a tense game for all involved and both teams looked like they may run away with it at different times.
Best player awards went to Karen Wright from Band of Misfits and Izak Atkinson from the Dungbeetles.
After toiling away all year at the bottom of the ladder, the seventh versus eighth game saw Mariners provide an upset in beating the BushChooks in the battle to avoid the wooden spoon.
One of the best and closest games of the night was played in the fifth versus sixth final, where Big Maks and You’re It were all squared at 6-6 when the final siren went.
In touch, if there is a draw in a final, teams lose a player every two minutes until there is a winner decided.
Both teams started the drop off with five players, and before we needed to lose anymore, on only the second possession of the extra time, Big Maks crossed to take the win.
Third place was claimed by the DynoWhites who were up against the fast improving Untouchables.
In a game that could’ve gone either way, DynoWhites prevailed to win 10-7.
It was a particularly high scoring game considering the slippery conditions.
After a long and very successful season it was great to be able to sit down with all club members and enjoy a meal and a drink and to start making plans for next year where the competition hopes to get even more teams involved.
