Georgiana Molloy Anglican School student Lochie Gibson is among 120 students from around Australia attending the National Schools Constitutional Convention in Canberra this week.
The 18-year-old, who studies politics and law, said he was keen to apply for the national event after his experience at the state convention.
Lochie hopes to work in foreign relations in the future, and said a school exchange to Japan in 2017 had inspired him to get involved in as many political and foreign affairs-related opportunities as possible.
"I think building your knowledge of politics and foreign affairs helps you understand the position Australia is in, what is happening in the economy as well as socially and politically," he said.
The topic for the 2019 convention is, ‘A new constitutional preamble for Australia?’.
The topic will provide students with the opportunity to explore the present Constitution and if a preamble is required.
A range of stimulus speakers will discuss the issues with students for them to debate with all delegates.
Outcomes from the convention will be incorporated into a communiqué that will be presented for tabling in parliament and recorded in the Hansard.
As a national delegate Lochie, is part of a group of 15 students from Western Australia.
Emeritus Professor John Warhurst AO from the Australian National University will facilitate the convention.
He said the convention provided students with the unique opportunity to debate constitutional reform at the highest level.
"It is important our future leaders are given opportunities to explore constitutional issues to inspire an active young Australian voice in our democracy," he said.
"The topic of The Preamble will give the student delegates an excellent chance to reflect on Australia's heritage and values.”
Other elements of the program will include a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives and a dinner at the High Court of Australia.
