The 61st Australian Police Bowling Championships is underway at the Busselton Bowling Club bringing 160 bowlers from around Australia and Hong Kong to the region.
WA Police Bowling Club President Rob Bellis said the event had been running since 1958, and had grown over the years to include police bowling clubs from five states around Australia and this year they were fortunate enough to be joined by the Hong Kong team.
"It is quite significant, every year it rotates around the states, it is fabulous it is WA's turn again and we selected the lovely Busselton area to hold it," he said.
"We held the event at Busselton in 2014, the club was brilliant, the greens were sensational and the accommodation around here is second to none.
"It was a no-brainer to hold it in Busselton.
"We started on Wednesday with a charity day, all the money raised will go to Police Legacy, today it starts in earnest and goes through until next Thursday."
Busselton Bowling Club president said Don Grey said it was absolutely fantastic for the club and the region.
"Not only do the people come to play bowls, they also visit the wineries in the region and utilise all the facilities, it is fantastic," he said.
"For us it generates a great income over the next week, which is a great benefit for the club."
City of Busselton mayor Grant Henley said the police bowling clubs obviously enjoyed their last time in Busselton to return for their second national championships.
"There is an international contingent from Hong Kong, which brought two teams of 25 bowlers, one team is participating and the other is travelling and playing regional bowling teams," he said.
"I am sure they will really enjoy it and will bring some money into town, and also the bowlers will enjoy some comradery throughout the course of the event."
WA Police assistant commissioner Nick Anticich, the patron of the WA Police Bowling Club, said it was the second time he had been to Busselton to attend the Australian Police Bowling Championships.
"Five years ago the WA Police Bowling Club won the event and we are hoping to repeat it again this year and of course we welcome the participants from all the states and our friends from Hong Kong as well," he said.
