"Hair-raising" and "dangerous" are how Siesta Park residents and business owners have described traffic along the 90 kilometre per hour stretch of Caves Road.
Four Seasons Caravan Park owner Bill Kendall said they had been trying to get a median strip installed in the middle of Caves Road to make it safer for people to cross the road.
Mr Kendall said parents, children and dogs crossed the road to access the beach from his park and he had seen children drop items and run back to pick them up.
"Every year we hear at least half-a-dozen brakes lock up, last year there was an accident, fortunately it was not a fatality," he said.
"If they had an island in the middle people would only have to walk halfway, wait for a break, then walk across the road. People are then only dealing with one lane then."
Mr Kendall said during Leavers, the speed limit was reduced along the stretch to 60km/hr and he would like to see the speed limit reduced permanently.
Resident Jill Perry said the road was bedlam during peak holiday times and the 90km/hr speed limit made it dangerous for residents waiting to turn into their properties.
"It is quite hair-raising sitting there," she said.
A Main Roads spokesperson said speed limits were reduced at various locations on Caves Road during Leavers Week because of the higher volume of vulnerable road users.
Crash statistics for the five-year period ending December 31, 2018, within the vicinity of the Four Seasons Holiday Park, revealed there had been four reported crashes during this period.
"As anticipated, traffic volumes over the past five years have increased in the area," the spokesperson said.
"However, speed data collected by Main Roads during this period has shown the speed chosen by the majority of road users complies with the current posted speed limit of 90 km/h.
"Based on this high compliance rate, in combination with the relatively low crash statistics, the current posted speed limit through the area is appropriate and as such, any amendment is not warranted.
"Main Roads will continue to monitor this section of Caves Road and, as with all roads, revise the speed limit if, and when, it becomes necessary.
"The construction of pedestrian facilities, such as a median strip near the Four Seasons Holiday Park, falls within the responsibilities of the City of Busselton."
Vasse MLA Libby Mettam said she had met with Mr Kendall on several occasions regarding public safety and it was vital progress was made in resolving the matter.
"I first raised this with the Transport Minister in April 2017 and as I understand there is no further progress from either Main Roads or the City of Busselton," she said.
"I am supporting the petition initiated by locals and have again written to the Minister requesting a speed limit reduction in the first instance."
The City did not respond in time for publication.
