Local Margaret River surfer Jack Robinson has started his Hawaiian campaign in fine style with a third place in the Vans Pro at Sunset Beach where 112 competitors were challenging for prestigious win.
Robinson always puts in strong performances in Oahu and is comfortable in the extra-large powerful surf the north shore produces. Growing up in the South West has provided Jack with experience in some of the best waves on the planet and it shows whenever he surfs in Hawaii. The local lad stole the show throughout the event at the famed right hander with a 10-point ride for a ridiculous deep barrel and he proceeded to back it up with an excellent nine-pointer during the heat.
After making the final he has gained further World Qualifying points towards the 2020 world tour but needs more points to qualify. Robinson currently sits in 20th position on the qualifying tour and needs to be in the top 11 to make the cut. There are two more events in Hawaii this year, another at Sunset Beach and the other at Haleiwa which are highly rated 10,000 point events so anything is possible depending on these next events. Robinson has won at Sunset Beach and the legendary Pipeline before so his track record is imposing.
Qualifying for the 2020 would be incredible news for not only Robinson or WA but also Australian surfing because Brazil is currently dominating the tour and there's need for a new hero to challenge the world. #gojack
