A section of boardwalk on the Cape to Cape Track between Moses Rock and Quinninup Falls has been made possible thanks to an $8,000 donation from the Busselton Runners' Club.
Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions representative Kane Goodwin said there was an urgent need for the boardwalk to protect surrounding terrain during the wet season when the falls were a popular destination for tourists.
The new section of boardwalk has raised the track over a wet and messy section of landscape and in time will enable the natural vegetation to regenerate.
Mr Goodwin said planning and logistical issues delayed the project for nearly two years, including seasonal matters and difficulties in accessing the remote site.
He said that without the generous donation from the Busselton Runners' Club, the boardwalk may not have been built at all.
Friends of the Cape to Cape Track chairman Kevin Lange thanked the club for their donation and commented on the positive difference it would make to volunteers assisting along the track, particularly in winter.
Busselton Runners Club member (and City of Busselton councillor) Ross Paine said the club had focused on helping local causes over the last six years and handed over an oversized cheque to symbolise the donation.
A commemorative plaque was unveiled to mark the occasion, with former councillor Tom Tuffin being commended for his part in helping to coordinate communications between the groups.
About thirty people, including a large contingent from the Busselton Runners' Club and members of the Friends of the Cape to Cape Track, gathered to mark the official opening of the boardwalk.
