The Busselton Jetty Crew are in the running for the Woolworths Youth Group Achievement Award in the 2020 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards.
The Jetty Crew program was created to encourage young people aged between 16 and 21 years to be passionate about the Busselton Jetty and its preservation.
The Busselton Jetty take on around eight young people each year who complete a year long volunteering program which sees them gain skills in leadership, event management, diving and jetty conservation.
Busselton Jetty human resources manager Karina Donohoe said it was young people in the community who would be the next generation of board members and caretakers of the jetty.
"Each year we have run the program at least two crew members go onto do marine science at university," she said.
"For us that is fantastic, if we have contributed to that, it is a bonus.
"Most of our crew are in Year 11 and 12 at school and we have some gap year students as well."
The program is run in three parts, focusing on: community; leadership, professional and personal development; and history.
"The crew learn about the history of the jetty why it is here, where it is going, what the future plans are and what it takes to keep it operational and maintained," Ms Donohoe said.
"It is not just about the environment or conservation side of things, it also looks at where finances come from."
This year the Busselton Jetty hope to tie in the program to the Duke of Edinburgh Awards after one of their crew members completed both last year.
"It is all about the crew getting something out of this program at the end of the day," Ms Donohoe said.
"We want them to learn something and we want to install that passion."
The 7NEWS Young Achiever group award recognises young groups who demonstrate values that show strong leadership ability, think creatively and act decisively.
