The men's section of the Dunsborough Bowling Club has been successful the past few years in recruiting novice players. This year the novice championship saw seven newcomers contesting the event. Played over two days between bowlers who know each other well and who have forged great friendship over a short period, this competition promised to be exciting.
Promises were kept. From the first day any of the seven bowlers could have come through to the final. It was only because of a little luck here and there that each game was won.
In what could have been a final game Phil Higgins and Gary Atkinson put on a fantastic display of bowls with each one trying to outdraw the other at every end. Both on 20 points, one had to win and it was Higgins, but Atkinson went through to the final on shots up to meet with the other finalist Gary Bell.
In the championship game of 21-up Bell came out swinging and it looked like it was all over red rover when he was leading 14-3 with 9 ends played. Full report at busseltonmail.com.au.
