The Buselton Senior Citizens Centre continues to serve up meals on wheels to some of the community's more elder residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The centre's manager Sue Greco said meals on wheels was an essential service to deliver nutritional food to senior members living throughout the Busselton and Dunsborough area.
The centre currently provides around 70 meals each day from Monday to Friday.
"Not only are we delivering meals on wheels we are also providing takeaways meals," she said.
Takeaway meals are available from the centre between 12pm and 1pm Monday to Friday, but people should call ahead and order before 11am on 9752 2232.
The centre has a choice of takeaway food including fresh or frozen meals.
Ms Greco said every Friday they cooked a roast and a lot more people were coming into collect a meal.
"Everyone is following the rules and people are staying home but there are a few people who will come in for a takeaway meal because we have setup a social distancing system," she said.
"When people pick up their meals only one person is allowed to go in at a time, we have made it very safe for them."
Ms Greco said there were some seniors in the community who were feeling isolated and lonely during the pandemic after the Federal Government advised people aged more than 60 years to avoid contact with others.
Older people have the highest rate of fatality and risk of seriousness illness if they catch COVID-19, particularly for those with other health conditions or a weakened immune system.
While there is no cure, vaccine or immunity for COVID-19, Australians have been asked to stay at home and self isolate.
"The people who used to be very social and come into the centre or go to other activities are feeling quite isolated and lonely," she said.
"Some people are probably feeling very scared at this stage and if they have certain illnesses are also feeling compromised.
"They are very grateful we are still providing meals on wheels and also takeaways.
"There are many seniors who do not cook so they are very thankful this service is still being provided."
Senior citizens who would like to find out more about accessing meals on wheels should contact Community Home Care on 9754 4716.
"People do need to fit a certain criteria but during this pandemic it should be a lot easier for them to get the meals on wheels," she said.
