The Margaret River Chocolate Company has launched an 'Easter in July' promotion for three weeks until the start of the July school holidays to help fund quokka conservation and research and satisfy the cravings of those who had their Easter ruined by COVID-19.
The company, in partnership with the Rottnest Island Authority, had planned to enshrine the chocolate quokka as the quintessential Easter gift for Western Australians this year, but with the island closed and many people self isolating, Easter 2020 "got lost".
The company's Martin Black said now with restrictions eased many customers were lamenting the fact that they had missed out on Easter and their traditional favourites, so it sparked the 'Easter in July' idea.
"We had already made a fair bit of Easter product before COVID-19 closed everything down, so we had plenty of surplus stock, particularly of the chocolate quokkas and other lines like eggs and Bilbys," Mr Black said.
"So we decided to make the first weekend of July our 'Easter' this year and we have plenty of Easter eggs, bunnies, bilbys and of course quokkas to sell between now and the new 'Easter' weekend.
In addition to the $2 it donates to the Rottnest Foundation for every chocolate quokka sold, this Easter the Margaret River Chocolate Company raised the donation to $3 to give funding programs a boost.
It will continue to donate $3 per Chokka the Quokka sold during Easter in July.
Special Easter Chokka the Quokkas are available from The Margaret River Chocolate Company's three outlets and online until July 12.
The special 'Easter in July' product range will also include giant bunnies, freckled eggs, redgum honey crunch eggs, sugar-free eggs and bilbies and Ruby chocolate eggs.
Entry to both of the company's factories in the Swan Valley and Margaret River, as well as its city store on Murray Street, is free, with the two factories open every day from 9-5.
