The Wizard of Oz is coming to the Weld Theatre in Busselton with director Stephen Lee bringing some of the magic seen in the film to the stage.
While it has been challenging for the crew to figure out how they could bring some of that magic to the stage, Mr Lee said it had been great fun to work with something that has so much colour.
"It is a fun show with a fair bit of humour," he said.
"What I really wanted to do in this show was capture some of the magic," he said.
"In film it is easy, you can do magic very easily but when it comes to theatre just thinking, how on Earth do you have Glinda the Good Witch floating on a soap bubble?
"You have to find ways of doing these kinds of things.
"For example some of the magic we had to think about was, how do you make the witch melt?
"She has to melt on stage so there is nothing left but a hat and her broom.
"I won't say how we did it, but that took a bit of thinking."
Mr Lee said there were various bits of magic dotted throughout the play that they had to find ways of working into the production.
"In a very small intimate theatre like the Weld we cannot fly people in, but we are supposed to have flying monkeys so we had to find ways of doing all of this," he said.
Mr Lee said they were excited to be putting on The Wizard of Oz because it was a show that people wanted to see.
"We have done The Sound of Music, Annie and now we are doing The Wizard of Oz," he said.
"What is interesting about this is that it is a full show and a bit longer than the film.
"When they did the film the songs were actually written a bit longer than what you see, they got cut down, so we have been able to do all the full songs.
"We even include one song and dance that was cut from the film just for time reasons.
"They got really panicky when they made the film that it would be too long and that people wouldn't want to watch it so they cut one of the songs.
"They were even going to cut Over the Rainbow.
"They left it in very begrudgingly and of course now everybody knows Over the Rainbow.
"It is great fun and a chance for everyone to see the full show as it was originally written.
"It is also wonderful that we have great roles for so many kids, there are 40 or so youngsters in the play because we have double cast them."
The Wizard of Oz will be on at the Weld Theatre from October 1 until October 11, 2020. Tickets are limited so be quick.
