Perth's iconic Royal King's Park Tennis Club accepted an invitation from the Busselton Tennis Club to visit and play a social match last Saturday followed by a competition challenge on Sunday.
The special two-club challenge event which was started four years ago was promoted by RKPTC's Greg Jacobs, a previous BTC member and supported by RKPTC tennis coaches Ryan Maxfield and Kurt Robinson, together with BTC coaches Ben McLaughlin and Cal McCaulay.
The Busselton Club and it's sponsor the Esplanade Hotel hosted a 'Welcome to Busso' dinner for the event on the Saturday night prior to the comp start the following morning when 40 players in teams of 10 played off in social challenge matches on BTC's grass courts, with each club vying for the latest bragging rights.
While there is no unique trophy as yet, BTC's challenge event manager Mac McDonald said that he hoped that would soon change due to the ongoing popularity of the high quality grass court mixed player event.
This year the standard of play was of an entertainingly high level from both clubs with the mens teams equalling score-wise at six sets all.
Busselton's womens team were clear winners at eleven sets to one.
The overall winners on the day were the Busselton teams with Kings Park inviting their regional hosts to a city rematch as soon as possible.
The player of the day was BTC's Taryn Sullivan who won all four sets whilst only conceded two games. In the men's contest, the centre court action treated spectators to some spectacular fast fire action play by both clubs from the four club coaches as well as from local members Bryce Godfrey, Ben Priest and Andrew O'Neill.
For anyone wishing to see top emerging young talent, BTC invites you to their club to spectate from their raised viewing verandah WA's best 7-16 year old's as they compete for 2021 rankings in the Tennis West sanctioned four day state competition.
The Junior Tournament will be played at the club over the coming Australia Day long weekend, this Friday, January 22 to Monday, January 25, 2021.
