It hit 37 degrees Celcius in the shade at the Dunsborough Bowling Club when final of the men's championship pairs was played over the weekend.
In this sweltering heat the level of bowls in both the major and the plate was intense and competitors deserved all the applause given by spectators.
Graham Winter and John Mawson played Rob Prentice and John Eggleton in the championship game, while Merv Mott and Norm Gage faced off against Kevin Cartwright and Heinz Fischer in the plate.
Up until the eighth end in the major it could have been anyone's game with both teams alternating the lead.
However, after holding shot quite comfortably Winter put his last bowl down to hold two when he took the jack back and conceded three.
This was the turning point in the game. In that one end team Prentice doubled their opposition's score and would not allow them further entry into the competition.
Eggleton led like the champion he became and continually put his bowls on the jack while skip Prentice put the icing on the cake with top class bowling.
Team Winter was not disgraced, however. Everyone knows the Smart catchphrase of "missed by that much" and that expression was borrowed by team Winter with both players executing bowls that "missed by that much".
"It may have been a yard for all that it mattered," said Winter after the match.
If anyone of those close misses had been successful the outcome could have been different.
At the conclusion, the 16th end did not have to be played as team Prentice took out the title 17-6 with both team members playing outstanding bowls.
On the rink next door, the final of the plate was extremely exciting with team Mott just falling over the finishing line 11-10 against team Cartwright.
