City of Busselton council approve hospitality and accommodation precinct in Dunsborough

The City of Busselton council unanimously approved a new hospitality and accommodation development in Dunsborough's town centre at its council meeting on May 12, 2021.

The development application proposed a micro-brewery, restaurant, cafe, 18 chalet units, 2 self-contained units and a central alfresco dining space on Dunn Bay Road (located on the corner of Cape Naturaliste Drive).

Council adopted an alternative motion raised by deputy mayor Kelly Hick which would limit the number of patrons at the venue from 10pm until midnight, among other conditions.

The developers, Place Development Australia, anticipate that the project would assist with a current shortfall of accommodation in the town centre and deliver a new entry statement into the town.

PDA director Rob-Bates Smith said they aimed to progress a considered precinct that united community need, nature and amenity.

"Thoughtful architecture and light-touch landscaping will ensure existing trees and vegetation are retained while delivering a new entry statement to the town enhancing its appeal for both the local community and visitors," he said.

Construction is anticipated to get underway by mid-2021 and meet a community demand for a seven-day a week activated food and beverage and accommodation precinct.

WA hospitality heavyweight Miles Hull of Dark Horse Hospitality Group has been appointed as the venue's operator.

Mr Bates-Smith said Mr Hull's experience within the hospitality sector and proven ability to create highly activated, distinct and iconic venues and precincts made him the ideal choice for 61 Dunn Bay Road.

"Miles is responsible for some of WA's most successful and memorable hospitality precincts and experiences," he said.

"Venues including the Alex Hotel & Shadow Wine Bar, Little Creatures Brewing and Quarter Acre Hotel have proven time and time again his ability to deliver and operate destinations of a world-class standard.

"He has a thorough approach to creating new community, tourism and hospitality destinations and as such we are thrilled to announce such an ideal fit for Dunn Bay Road and the town of Dunsborough."

Mr Hull said the new precinct would feed a desire for an active day and evening precinct within the town centre.

"Our intent is to create a place that enhances the town's options for morning, noon and night food, beverage and accommodation options," he said.

"Ultimately, we want to increase vibrancy and visitation within the town centre by delivering a precinct with a distinct 'down-south' vibe - somewhere you can visit straight from the beach, walk or cycle to - to enjoy a quality hospitality experience be it coffee, lunch, dinner or a late evening drink."

Mr Hull said the development included a large green-scaped alfresco area which would provide a place to sit and relax alongside a mix of food and beverage options, as well as local artisan stores.

" It will be a vibrant and welcoming destination for locals and visitors from morning through to the evening," he said.
