Busselton All Sports Inc have announced the 2022 Busselton Jetty Swim event will move to a ballot process.
Anyone can enter the ballot, with places randomly selected by a computer.
The system has been introduced to eliminate the rush on registrations, and technical issues.
As part of the announcement the organisers have also released a theme for the event which is Participate: Achieve:Belong.
All Sports Inc committee member Simon Mansfield said the theme encompassed what the event was about.
"This is an event run by local volunteers is solely organised to provide an opportunity for everyone to Participate," he said.
"Achieve personal goals and most importantly Belong, whether a volunteer and spectator or a swimmer.
"The Busselton Jetty Swim is a race that originated around a spirit of participation and this has been the core to its growth over the now many years.
"Participation in this event for locals and visitors is about achieving a goal, but not just achieving it, doing it in an event where everyone's achievements are celebrated, an event where young and old, fast and slow swimmers feel a sense of belonging."
The event will be held on February 12 and 13 and will see 4,000 swimmers take to the water.
Registrations for the ballot open at 6am on October 1, and will close at 11:59 pm on Sunday October 10. All entrants will be contacted on October 15 to be advised whether they have been successful, or if they have been placed on the waitlist. Registrations for Kids Swim open on October 15.
