AUSTRALIAN surfing champion Mick Fanning is calling on the Busselton community to "be a part of history" in the Wings for Life World Run in May.
Fanning, along with his good friend Barney Miller are ambassadors for the world first event held in Busselton on May 4.
The event aims to raise money for those who can't with all proceeds going towards spinal cord injury research.
Miller holds the event close to his heart, being a quadriplegic after a car accident 15 years ago.
He was 20 years old when the accident occurred and he said it was "gut-wrenching" to be told he would never walk again.
"I never want to have that feeling again but it ignited a flame I never knew existed," Miller said.
Fanning said it was five years ago when Miller came to him and said he would walk again.
Last year Miller was able to stand up next Fanning.
"It's a feeling like no other - just amazing," Miller said.
Miller can now take assisted steps and his next goal is to dance with his future wife at their wedding in 2015.
"I'm working really hard and I'm up on my feet and I cannot wait to give her the perfect wedding present," he said.
While Fanning has been amazed with what Miller has achieved, it is the legendary surfer who helps inspire Miller to reach his goals.
"Mick has been a support for me and shown that with hard work anything can happen," Miller said.
The pair said the work the doctors had done within Wings for Life was incredible and it was only a matter of time before they found a cure.
"I have seen what they have done and it's not a matter of if anymore, it's a matter of when," Miller said.
VIDEO: Watch Mick Fanning talk about the Wings For Life World Run below.
The Wings for Life World Run will be a world first where thousands of people across the world will run at the same time.
People will run or walk for 20 minutes before a catcher car will come along at 15 kilometres per hour.
Once the car passes a runner, they stop and the car will keep going until the last person in the world is running.
"This is an awesome event and isn't just for the professional runners but the casual ones too," Fanning said.
Unfortunately Fanning will be in the air when the race goes ahead, but Miller will be supporting on the sidelines of the California event.
