A PERSON who influences your life when you are a student is often hard to forget.
This was the thought of a Busselton volunteer who has given 11 years of his time to mentoring students at Vasse Primary School.
Malcolm Jennings volunteers for the School Volunteer Program because he genuinely enjoyed engaging with the students.
“The object is to provide one on one contact with children who may have a little issue and need to talk about things,” he said.
The school is currently looking for male volunteers to take part in the program.
Mr Jennings said it was good for the children to have more male influences that can help with their emotional development and work as a positive role model.
Vasse Primary School principal Brian Devereux said with the program results were often more apparent down the track but it was when the volunteer was unable to attend when feedback was heard from the students.
“There is often an emotional reaction from the students when the volunteer can’t make it which demonstrates engagement and a connection,” he said.
The school’s chaplain Rowena Oldfield organises the program and said they were looking for volunteers who were reliable, good listeners and able to engage with a young person.
The volunteers are required to mentor once a week during school time and training is provided.
