Swimming in the footy pond are some pretty big fish.
And following the off- season announcement of Lance Franklin's jaw-dropping nine-year deal with the Sydney Swans, the biggest fish of all now goes by the name "Buddy".
Yet despite the huge pay-packet and apparent goodwill directed towards him from his new teammates, the former Hawk is looking more like a fish out of water.
It's a predicament that could so easily have been avoided, had the Swans and the AFL heeded the warning in Helen Palmer's '60s kids classic A Fish Out Of Water, illustrated by the great P.D.Eastman, about a boy whose fish grows to a mammoth size:
"Never feed him a lot, Never more than a spot! Or something may happen. You never know what."
